Auditorium building and music hall, and the Lotus

Auditorium building and music hall, and the Lotus

From the Portland Tribune, July 24th 2008:

"Q: What kind of auditorium used to occupy the now-vacant downtown building at 920 S.W. Third Ave.? Hint: It wasn’t a school.

A: For the past year, the stately four-story building has been empty, listed for sale for a mere $3.02 million by Mele, Taylor & Westerdahl Inc.

Broker Don Mele says that’s a real bargain, considering the space and the building’s history. “It’s a great deal considering the construction of the building, the location and the market,” he said. “This is a value for how large the building is.”

The Auditorium and Music Hall building, as it’s called, was designed in 1890 by British architect F.Mason White, who is responsible for numerous historical structures in Portland, including Ringlers Annex.

It was first owned by Portland hotelier Emil Jorgensen and used as a concert venue as well as a commerce center. The second floor featured an ornate dance hall, which at the time was considered one of the focal points of Portland’s social activity.

The early 1900s saw the auditorium’s conversion to apartments, and it later operated as a boxing gymnasium from the 1920s to the 1960s.

In 1983 the building underwent a complete renovation byGBDArchitects, its current owners, and was home toGBD’s firm withabout 23,000 square feet of office space.

It’s now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, known as one of the few remaining examples of Romanesque Revival architecture, with plant motifs on the facade that highlight historic architect Louis Sullivan’s influence.

The building sold recently but Mele didn’t want to reveal the new owners’ name, since the transaction is still in closing."

Flea Market, Venetian Style

Flea Market, Venetian Style

In Campo San Barnaba | Dorsoduro we came across this Saturday morning flea market featuring the same junk you'd find at a flea market in your neighborhood - typewriters, turntables, VCR's, stereos, rugs, lamps, books, pictures, glassware.... Can't call it a "garage sale" here as there are no cars and no garages in Venice!

I was able to place this sunny campo accurately on the map after zooming in to read the name of the restaurant on the awning.
